‘Birds of Prey’ SPOILER Review

After letting dust collect on this site for weeks I am finally back! This past Friday we had the release of DC’s latest installment in their cinematic universe (is it still a universe?), Birds of Prey. Though this movie opened at number one this weekend it did so with a lower then expected box office of $33.3 Million. Yikes. Despite low turnout was it any good? Let’s get into the good and the bad. THE GOOD Black Canary: This has been brought up in just about every review I’ve encountered so far; Jurnee Smollett-Bell is excellent in this role. It should be mentioned that it is a small one, more on that below, but what she did get to do with it was phenomenal. I would have liked to see her use the canary cry more than once though. I understand they wanted to build up to that single use to give it more weight in the scene, but come on. This is Black Canary. Yes, she’s a character that doesn’t need her power to …

‘Birds of Prey’ FINAL Trailer; Alright, I Think I Get It

It is just a good week for comic movie trailers! We have our final preview of next month’s Birds of Prey. Yes, the one without Oracle (I’m still not over it)! Has the trailer changed my feelings? Let’s get into it! More of the Birds: Right off the bat I would like to express my gratitude that the trailer made the effort to showcase the ensemble better than the original trailer did. I understand that no matter what this is GOING to be the Harley Quinn show. However, it isn’t much to ask that the film at least do right by its supporting characters and make sure they get their fare share of screen time.  This trailer showed that Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) will have her powers! Will there be the iconic leather jacket and fishnets? Apparently not, but what can we say? Pick your battles. It looks like Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) will get some decent action scenes; as well as many of the other members to the ensemble. Overall, though these characters seem to …

“Joker” SPOILER Review

Just got out of Todd Phillips’ Joker…Guys, honestly, this is a tough review. I can’t recall the last time I’ve had to review something that was so parallel to real issues. As I write this I know I’m going to be marinating the idea of “art vs. zeitgeist”; does the former influence the latter or vice versa.  THAT being said…Let’s get this over with. THE GOOD  Phoenix: Does Phoenix deliver as the Joker? Yes. For what little time we got to see him. I might have mentioned that something I detest about some comic book films, especially origins, is the tactic of reserving the reveal of the character (or final transformation) for the third act; sometimes even the very end of the third act. This movie seems to do that with Joker. What Phoenix portrays for the majority of the movie is a mentally ill man who never really had a chance to make anything of his life. From the very opening of the movie we get a man being beat down (literally and figuratively), and …

Shortlist for Catwoman Revealed

This morning I was pumped to find on Twitter that the the shortlist for the casting of Catwoman in the upcoming Batman film has been released! Was this an accident? Nah, bitch. This was likely released on purpose for the studio to gain an idea of what direction fans are leaning in order to help (but not control) their decision. I want to go down the list of each beautiful black actress (So happy they’re going to give us some Eartha Kitt vibes) and see which I think have the strongest chances. Tessa Thompson: Out of the gates I have to say I don’t think she’s a real contender for the role. Yes, she’s stunning, yes she gives Eartha Kitt vibes to the T, but I just don’t see her opposite Robert Pattinson in this movie. I know some might think her staple in the MCU makes her a strong contender, but I would hope that Warner Bros. would go with a lesser known actress to really make a debut as Catwoman. Do I think she’ll …

Could ‘Suicide Squad’ Become DCEU’s ‘Fast and Furious’ Franchise?

With nine films under its belt (if you include the recently successful Hobbs & Shaw), there’s no doubting that the Fast and Furious franchise continues to be a box office powerhouse eighteen years since its beginning. Certainly a franchise that has had it’s growing pains but, like any great film engine, it found its formula and has continued to pop out winner after winner. Are these films that spark conversation, address deep rooted social issues, and provide allegories of our troubled reality? F*** no! They are mindless, hysterical, explosive, and classic popcorn fun! Yes, in the age of harsh realism and dark films, cheesy explosion blockbusters are still a great time at the movies. Something I feel has added to the success of the Fast and Furious franchise aside from its ridiculous stunts (cars out of airplanes?!) has been the richness of the cast’s diversity. No tokens! Just all shades of people coming together for an action-packed adventure. As James Gunn posted the official cast of his upcoming Suicide Squad I feel I must wonder- Could Suicide …

‘Swamp Thing’ Cancelled: Uuuuhhh

SO, it has just been reported that DC Universe’s latest installment, Swamp Thing,  has been cancelled after just one episode… talk about a horror situation. Some might recall that weeks ago the episode count for the season was reduced from thirteen to ten with little to no explanation as to why. For damage control, the streaming service decided to drop the first teaser image for the protector of the green; an image that was, in my opinion, pretty damn good! I watched the pilot episode and gave my review. Overall, I thought it had a ton of promise! It leaned in HEAVY to the horror genre and managed to gross the F@#%@ out of me! Is that everyone’s cup of tea? Not at all. It certainly isn’t mine. Yet, I appreciated what the series was trying to do with the property. Horror has been the genre that comic book adaptations hasn’t been able to break into (at least not successfully) and it seemed the series was on its way to pull it off.  What seems …

Robert Pattinson is Batman

Look, it’s fine. It’s Fine! Did all my God given senses erupt unanimously in a vibration of ‘NO!’? Damn sure did. Then, I let it register and remembered we’ve done this too many F$#^$# times and we got to learn eventually. People were upset when Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman, when Ben Affleck got Batman, and more examples I just can’t recall. The point is, we’re going to be just fine. At the end of the day what really matters is the quality of that script and Matt Reeves vision. In my opinion Ben Affleck wasn’t just a good Batman but he was the BEST Bruce Wayne we have ever gotten.  That didn’t save him though! We never really got to see the full potential of the Batman and that will always suck. Twilight here might be able to take the character and do some good stuff with it. Let’s give him a fair shot. NOW, I’m going to need him to gain at least twenty pounds of muscle and change that hair …

Why Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ Just Might Work

I have been the loudest voice against this movie. I have said time and time again that Warner/DC should be focusing it’s efforts on building up their heroes along with villains, set in a modern setting where crossovers can happen, and that creating a Joker movie without Batman would be against the very identity of the character. After seeing the trailer for the film last week I have to say-I may have to eat my words. The Joker himself has said it himself, he exists because of the Batman. He is completed because of the Batman. If there were no Batman it would be no fun to do the things he does. They are both products of madness. They are both products of a corrupt and fucked up world. Where one chose to do evil the other chose to defend good. They cancel each other out. Heath Ledger’s Joker said it at the end of the Nolan film- Batman will never kill the Joker because that’s a line he cannot cross and the Joker will …

‘D-Day’ is for Disney

Disney has officially absorbed Fox Studios and more recently has announced the launch of it’s streaming platform Disney+.  What does this mean for streaming services across the board? In my humble opinion? The F$%&$& end of days! Yes, I like anyone else, am very excited for this to go live in November. We are talking every Disney movie, Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel all in one place! Not to mention the original (and damn expensive) content that will be premiering as well. However, with the birth of this new streaming service we could be seeing the extinction of others. For years now Netflix has pretty much had no challengers for the grip they hold on streaming entertainment. However, Disney going independent means all of their properties on Netflix have either been/will be removed or have been cancelled (all Marvel series).  Oh, and they’re not the only ones getting ready for battle! As a response to Disney’s announcement, Warner Bros. Entertainment has announced that they TOO will be launching their own platform. This means that all …
