‘X of Swords’ Chapters 6-8 Review

Another week so another set of X of Swords chapters. Last week felt more straight forward where this time around we had three unique narrative paths. There’s nothing too big from this bulk so let’s just get into it. Hellions: I wasn’t excited for this book in the slightest, but the writing is on point in this thing; a group of murderous mutants written like an HBO comedy is just- chef’s kiss* In this chapter we got sassy Sinister leading the charge. He presents a strategy to the quiet council to sneak into Arrako and steal the enemy swords before they can get to the tournament; this is obviously not going to work. This is indeed a suicide mission and I don’t see how any of these characters are going to get out alive; at least not all of them. It’s curious as to how Sinister is participating in resurrection protocols but at the same time isn’t? There are mutliple copies of himself hidden in his base and has more than one active at the …

‘New Mutants’ SPOILER Review

Thanks to the power of drive-in movie theaters in upstate New York I was finally able to see the (kind of?) anticipated New Mutants. It has been a hot minute since I have been able to review anything so let’s waste no more time; the good and the bad. The GOOD 1: Actors- These are some of my favorite X-book characters, and having them brought to life on screen supplied a fair dose of nerd anxiety. After seeing the cast in the roles I have to say I was satisfied with (most of) the portrayals we got. Ana Taylor-joy as Magik was fun to watch. I think she did a fantastic job of embodying Ilyana. That being said, I don’t know how I felt about her being our stand-in villain until the real villain revealed itself. Any and every scene she appears in she makes an aggressive choice to treat Dani like trash and sprinkle dashes of racism in between. Of course there is an explenation for this down the road, I digress, but overall …

ALL X-Titles Thus Far and Beyond

I am a huge Hickman fan. I absolutely loved the HOX/POX miniseries we got last year. I have been enjoying the majority, but certainly not all, of the Dawn of X titles that we have been getting. With 2020 upon us it seems we’ve had announcement after announcement after announcement for new titles! Having trouble keeping up with what is coming out and when, I figured I would go ahead and address the status of the current titles and what we can expect coming up. 1: X-Force: This is one of, if not THE book, that feels like the greatest direct sequel to the HOX/POX material we got last year. It’s dark, well written, and #5 did not disappoint. I’ve said it before, I’m not a huge X-Force guy but this book really delivers. I’m hoping for Colossus to get well soon so he can join in on the action, and especially need Jean to get out of that damn groovy dress; this is X-Force not the Brady Bunch. 2: New Mutants: It dipped there for a …

Wolverine Should Enter the MCU the Comics Way

We have little details regarding when we can expect the mutants to join the MCU. It was recently corrected that Disney does NOT see The New Mutants as part of their cinematic universe. However, should the film exceed expectations at the box office then I’m sure that’s nothing a little reality manipulation can’t fix that. If we are doing a clean reboot though, what does that look like? I’m a part of the camp that believes the X-Men should be as comic book accurate as possible. By this I mean the first film, or series, should focus on the original five members; Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel. Are they all fan favorites? No. Yet as I’ve said on many occasions, if the MCU can make Guardians of the Galaxy work then there is little to no reason the original five can’t win over the casual comic and movie fan as well. When it comes to actual favorites such as Storm and Wolverine, I think their level of fandom has earned them a space …

Episode 49 – So If Anyone Is Listening

This week the boys are back and there is a lot to unpack. The Golden Globes were this week so we start the episode discussing Ricky Gervais and the winners of the major awards (0:08:30). While we are on that subject, Rom gives his review of the movie ‘1917’ and tries to convince Gab to break his war movie boycott to see it (0:11:45). The big discussion of this episode then comes when we review the movie ‘Marriage Story’ on Netflix and talk about love (0:25:23). Please join us on the couch for all that and more, like the new trailer to ‘New Mutants’.

2020 is Year of Comic Heroines

2020 has begun and as the resident nerd of the 17 Waverly Podcast I am looking forward to the buckets of comic book content we are getting. As DC and Marvel prepare to launch their projects in the coming months I have found that there is a strong common denominator across the board; WOMEN. Birds of Prey: Say what you wish about DC live-action content over the past few years. If you choose the negative route I respect it. However, there is something  objectively true about the brand; they’re trail blazing. First studio to introduce darker and grittier tones, first studio to showcase a villain ensemble, and first studio to bring a successful female superhero to the big screen. 2020 will earn DC and Warner another badge of firsts as they release the first female ensemble superhero film with Birds of Prey due February 7, 2020. Am I one of those fans still pouting that it’s Birds of Prey and not Sirens? Yeah, a little. Am I annoyed Barbara Gordon is nowhere to be seen in …

‘New Mutants’ WILL Hit Theaters Under Disney; Do They Have Faith in Boone?

It has been over TWO YEARS since the original date The New Mutants was set to hit theaters. By late 2019 I assumed the film would have been indefinitely shelved or, at the very least, would have premiered quietly over on Hulu. To our surprise, Josh Boone’s film will not only stick to its alleged April 3, 2020 release but it will do so with ZERO alterations to his original vision. That is right. There were no reshoots. This leads to the suspicion that there might not have been anything wrong with the cut to begin with, but rather due to the uncertainty of the merger the film was indefinitely postponed until the dust settled. Now, we know that despite the merger Dark Phoenix still saw the light of day! However, we need to remember that it only did so after a couple delays of its own. More specifically, the film premiered almost a year after originally intended. Why did Dark Phoenix ultimately make it while New Mutants didn’t? I believe Dark Phoenix HAD to …

‘Dawn of X’ Titles Ranking

We are approaching the end of the year and have received our LAST installments for the six ongoing Dawn of X titles launched since the conclusion of Jonathan Hickman’s (iconic) House of X and Powers of X. As the twelve part mini-series revived my hope in the franchise, I have been tuning in every Wednesday to get my mutant fix. I thought it would be a good time, now that we’re done with new X-books for the year, to rank the six titles from best to worst! Here we go. 1: X-Force: I admit I wasn’t looking forward to this book when it was announced. I was never really an X-Force fan. I couldn’t get on board with the vibe. However, no other book of the six titles that have launched seems to carry-on the aesthetic and themes from HOX/POX as much as this book does. I appreciate what Benjamin Percy has done with the first four issues. I admit, Xavier’s death sparked a very loud, “al-F****-ready?!” but I think they landed that plane really …

‘Powers of X’ Finale SPOILERS: What Does it Mean for the Future?

Tomorrow is the release of Powers of X #6 and the 12th and final installment in Jonathan Hickman’s prologue to the Dawn of X.  I have had a chance to read some pages as well learn the big twist! Therefore, what follows absolutely contains SPOILERS. I want to talk about the reveals and do an overall analysis of what we might be able to expect in the Hickman era of mutants. The Sixth Life of Moira X: We have finally learned what is going on in X^3, and I admit I feel dumb for not noticing. The truth was staring us all in the face. The Librarian and the other blue people that surround this character are NOT mutants. They are humans, and even more so, they’re the actual next state in human evolution-homo navissima.  We find that the Librarian knows ascension is comng soon and he wishes to speak with Moira to see if she could, in a different life, stop the events from occurring. How is Moira still alive this far in the …

‘House of X’ Finale: Mutant Orgies..?

This week was the FINALE of the House of X limited series by Jonathan Hickman. Of course, the saga really concludes next week with the final issue of Powers of X, but what we have here is the final piece to understanding the new present for Marvel’s mutants. How did it all go down? Was there more mind blowing, was it game changing, and do we finally learn where the hell Moira is in all this!? Let’s get to it. Mutant F****ing is Mandatory: I will dive into the beginning of the issue later. For now I want to discuss the first meeting of the new mutant council which essentially is the first meeting of the newly established mutant government. Personally, I could have thought of some better choices for this council, but I will accept these as I’m sure the seats will be filled by others as the Hickman era (love saying that) continues. In this meeting we have the council determining the first laws of Krakoa; no mutant shall kill a human, the …
