‘X of Swords’ Chapters 9 and 10

It’s Wednesday so we have new X of Swords chapters! Unlike previous weeks we are only getting two installments this time around; Excalibur and X-Men issues #13 respetively. Excalibur: Ok, so no secret this is not my favorite book in the lineup; something about mutants and magic that have never mixed with me. I’m aware of the irony as this whole event seems to use magic as its base. However, Hickman and company have done a decent job at laying out their characters and plot so I’ve stuck around! The art in this book was superb! I really took my time going through the pages taking in the beautiful panels as well as the new reveals. Starlight Sword: I was correct! In a previous article breaking down the swords for the Krakoa champions I assumed that the Starlight Sword would go to Betsy Braddock. Out of all the blades this one is a close second next to Skybreaker for me. The design is badass and next to the new Captain Britain uniform it’s just- chef’s …

‘X of Swords’ Chapters 6-8 Review

Another week so another set of X of Swords chapters. Last week felt more straight forward where this time around we had three unique narrative paths. There’s nothing too big from this bulk so let’s just get into it. Hellions: I wasn’t excited for this book in the slightest, but the writing is on point in this thing; a group of murderous mutants written like an HBO comedy is just- chef’s kiss* In this chapter we got sassy Sinister leading the charge. He presents a strategy to the quiet council to sneak into Arrako and steal the enemy swords before they can get to the tournament; this is obviously not going to work. This is indeed a suicide mission and I don’t see how any of these characters are going to get out alive; at least not all of them. It’s curious as to how Sinister is participating in resurrection protocols but at the same time isn’t? There are mutliple copies of himself hidden in his base and has more than one active at the …

Alan Moore Still Hates Comics; What Are Ya Gonna Do?

Alan Moore, the man who created Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The Killing Joke, and a truly superb run of Swamp Thing did a recent interview with Deadline where he took the steamiest dump on comics and comic book movies. I am a huge comic fan, but even I have to admit this bloody genius made some pretty interesting arguments and ones worth diving into! “They have blighted cinema, and also blighted culture to a degree” Moore opens with addressing how he hasn’t seen a single comic book movie since the release of the first Tim Burton Batman film back in 1989. He mentions how comicbooks themselves are no longer independent of their film interpretations and they’ve completely ruined the industry. Alright, I don’t disagree totally about the state of film in general. There’s no doubt that comic book movies seem to have completely taken over the medium- when it comes to movie theaters. With raising ticket prices, the addition of streaming, and easy access to media on the internet, the thought of investing in a …

‘X of Swords’ Chapters 3-5

Hello fellow nerds! It’s another week which means another round of X of Swords chapters! Lucky for us we have three installments this time around; Wolverine #6, X-Force #13, and Marauders #13. As predicted, it seems like the first half of chapters (1-11) will focus on laying the groundwork for this ‘mutant mortal kombat;’ The ten champions of Krakoa need to go out and find their swords and return to the enchanted circle made from Rockslide’s remains. Our story continued this week with a focus on two MVP X-Men- Wolverine and Storm. 1: Solem- Wolverine got himself a two-parter! Starting in his solo title we see him begin his aggressive hunt for the unhinged Muramasa and his soul infused katana blades. The hunt takes our hero to, you guessed it, the infernal pits of hell! Seeing the demonic action, the Hand, and all the supernatural elements didn’t really catch my interest. Again, I love magic within fiction but it’s not my main pull when it comes to the X-Men. However, the two-part chapters did provide …

X-Factor #4/ X of Swords Chapter 2; Prophecy of Swords and Consequences of Otherworld

Alright, right off the bat I have to say this dense twenty-two chapter crossover event did not have me excited. I trust in Hickman, but I was aware that this would dive into the magical elements introduced in Excalibur (not my favorite book) and I was overall, eh. X of Swords Creation #1 was THICK. After reading it over a couple of times I think I understand what’s going on; still wasn’t totally sold on it. X-Factor #4 (aka X of Swords Chapter 2) however… Hickman you have me ensnared once again! The Tournament Has Consequence: I appreciated how this chapter picks up just moments after the conclusion of X of Swords Creation #1. Rockslide is dead. It didn’t have much of an impact on me in chapter one because I, like many, just thought- “Five! Fire up the eggs!” Then this issue threw us our first curve ball… It turns out that if one dies in Otherworld they cannot be properly resurrected. Since Otherworld serves as some kind of nexus between all realities to …

‘New Mutants’ SPOILER Review

Thanks to the power of drive-in movie theaters in upstate New York I was finally able to see the (kind of?) anticipated New Mutants. It has been a hot minute since I have been able to review anything so let’s waste no more time; the good and the bad. The GOOD 1: Actors- These are some of my favorite X-book characters, and having them brought to life on screen supplied a fair dose of nerd anxiety. After seeing the cast in the roles I have to say I was satisfied with (most of) the portrayals we got. Ana Taylor-joy as Magik was fun to watch. I think she did a fantastic job of embodying Ilyana. That being said, I don’t know how I felt about her being our stand-in villain until the real villain revealed itself. Any and every scene she appears in she makes an aggressive choice to treat Dani like trash and sprinkle dashes of racism in between. Of course there is an explenation for this down the road, I digress, but overall …

‘Young Avengers’ Will Likely be for Disney+; Here’s Why

It should come as no surprise to comic fans, who have met the cast of Young Avengers in the pages of Marvel Comics, that they indeed are on their way to live-action; the clues were everywhere! Rumor is going around that filming for the project (unknown if Disney+ or film) should start as early as 2021. Whether this will take a hit due to the pandemic is yet to be determined. My guess is that this will be a Disney+ production. Here’s why- Hulking and Wiccan. No, Young Avengers is nowhere near the fame of DC counterpart, Teen Titans. However it has had and does have a powerful cult following. A large reason for this is due to romantic couple of Hulking and Wiccan. Not only was their relationship presented in the comics as matter-of-fact from its inception but they have one of the most powerful romantic narratives in comics today. This isn’t because of their homosexuality, but because both characters have incredibly developed personal stories that enrich their pairing.  They’re not a “gay couple” but …

‘New Mutants’ Trailer REACTION

After two years we FINALLY have a new trailer for The New Mutants! Better than the first? Sure! Enough to get people to theaters? Let’s break it down! Catches the Spirit: Right off the bat I have to say that the trailer seems to catch the spirit of what makes the New Mutants special; at least what made them special back in the day starting with issue #18, the Demon Bear Saga, and the introduction of Bill Sienkiewicz’s art. There’s a creepiness to it, a grit, and the choice to use Pink Floyd in the trailer is a cherry on top of the cake. The New Mutants comic was able to connect horror elements into the superhero genre and it worked! I can’t tell from this trailer if the film will have the same success in this medium… I’m personally not a horror fan. I don’t mind some suspense and eerie aesthetics, but if that is the limit of it I would personally be fine with it.     Sunspot Issue: This will likely get …

‘Dawn of X’ Titles Ranking

We are approaching the end of the year and have received our LAST installments for the six ongoing Dawn of X titles launched since the conclusion of Jonathan Hickman’s (iconic) House of X and Powers of X. As the twelve part mini-series revived my hope in the franchise, I have been tuning in every Wednesday to get my mutant fix. I thought it would be a good time, now that we’re done with new X-books for the year, to rank the six titles from best to worst! Here we go. 1: X-Force: I admit I wasn’t looking forward to this book when it was announced. I was never really an X-Force fan. I couldn’t get on board with the vibe. However, no other book of the six titles that have launched seems to carry-on the aesthetic and themes from HOX/POX as much as this book does. I appreciate what Benjamin Percy has done with the first four issues. I admit, Xavier’s death sparked a very loud, “al-F****-ready?!” but I think they landed that plane really …

‘The Eternals’: D23 Reveals Kit Harington; Gemma Chan is the lead as Sersi

We are officially out of the D23 Expo and there is A LOT to cover. Today I wanted to get started with The (not that anticipated?) Eternals. Since it’s announcement, and especially after the confirmation of the Disney Acquisition of Fox, the property has become very easily dismissed by fans. After all, even among comic readers the IP isn’t that strong… To make up for it, Marvel has thrown an extremely star-studded cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, and this weekend added Kit Harington and Gemma Chan. When the film was announced headlines read that it would feature the MCU’s first openly gay superhero (though it was not specified who) and that the film would be first and foremost a love story… This gay comic book nerd allowed his heart to flutter just a little too much with the hope that this might be the first gay LEAD superhero film. However, this weekend seemed to confirm that Gemma Chan was not just cast the eternal Sersi, but would also be the film’s …
