ALL X-Titles Thus Far and Beyond

I am a huge Hickman fan. I absolutely loved the HOX/POX miniseries we got last year. I have been enjoying the majority, but certainly not all, of the Dawn of X titles that we have been getting. With 2020 upon us it seems we’ve had announcement after announcement after announcement for new titles! Having trouble keeping up with what is coming out and when, I figured I would go ahead and address the status of the current titles and what we can expect coming up. 1: X-Force: This is one of, if not THE book, that feels like the greatest direct sequel to the HOX/POX material we got last year. It’s dark, well written, and #5 did not disappoint. I’ve said it before, I’m not a huge X-Force guy but this book really delivers. I’m hoping for Colossus to get well soon so he can join in on the action, and especially need Jean to get out of that damn groovy dress; this is X-Force not the Brady Bunch. 2: New Mutants: It dipped there for a …

‘New Mutants’ Trailer REACTION

After two years we FINALLY have a new trailer for The New Mutants! Better than the first? Sure! Enough to get people to theaters? Let’s break it down! Catches the Spirit: Right off the bat I have to say that the trailer seems to catch the spirit of what makes the New Mutants special; at least what made them special back in the day starting with issue #18, the Demon Bear Saga, and the introduction of Bill Sienkiewicz’s art. There’s a creepiness to it, a grit, and the choice to use Pink Floyd in the trailer is a cherry on top of the cake. The New Mutants comic was able to connect horror elements into the superhero genre and it worked! I can’t tell from this trailer if the film will have the same success in this medium… I’m personally not a horror fan. I don’t mind some suspense and eerie aesthetics, but if that is the limit of it I would personally be fine with it.     Sunspot Issue: This will likely get …

‘Moon Knight’ to Feature Two Marvel Horror Characters; Is the MCU Embracing Fear?

Moon Knight is one of the many upcoming Marvel shows that will make its debut over on Disney+. Though an official release date (nor cast) has been confirmed at this time, we are receiving information regarding what characters we might have the chance to meet. In latest news it seems that both Dracula (yeah, that guy) and Werewolf by Night are set to appear in this upcoming Marvel show! Um, ok! Let’s talk about that! Something catching my eye is just how much the concept of “horror” seems to continue popping up within future Marvel projects. We have confirmed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the first official horror movie within the MCU. WandaVision, another series slated to premiere on Disney+, will incorporate horror elements as Wanda and Vision navigate an alternate reality. Then most recently we received news that the lone remaining Fox film, The New Mutants, will indeed move ahead with its April 3 release this year and will have a new trailer on January 6; if you didn’t already know, …

2020 is Year of Comic Heroines

2020 has begun and as the resident nerd of the 17 Waverly Podcast I am looking forward to the buckets of comic book content we are getting. As DC and Marvel prepare to launch their projects in the coming months I have found that there is a strong common denominator across the board; WOMEN. Birds of Prey: Say what you wish about DC live-action content over the past few years. If you choose the negative route I respect it. However, there is something  objectively true about the brand; they’re trail blazing. First studio to introduce darker and grittier tones, first studio to showcase a villain ensemble, and first studio to bring a successful female superhero to the big screen. 2020 will earn DC and Warner another badge of firsts as they release the first female ensemble superhero film with Birds of Prey due February 7, 2020. Am I one of those fans still pouting that it’s Birds of Prey and not Sirens? Yeah, a little. Am I annoyed Barbara Gordon is nowhere to be seen in …

‘WandaVision’ Now Set to Release in 2020; Are X-Men Closer Than We Think?

As of January 1, 2020 the upcoming Marvel original series for Disney+, WandaVision, will no longer premiere in Spring 2021, as originally intended, but will rather air THIS year, 2020. Why the change? Well, it wasn’t too long ago we received confirmation that not only will The New Mutants commit to its (once again) rescheduled April 3, 2020 release but that the film would receive a brand new trailer due out January 6. Let’s not forget that Wanda, the Scarlet Witch, was originally a reality warping mutant. Though recent comics have labeled her as the “pretender,” it wouldn’t be crazy to assume that something involved in this new series (which has already confirmed houses the two leads in an alternate reality) could shift something in the MCU cosmos to open the door, or at least crack it a bit, to introduce the X-Men. WandaVision seems intended to house some horror elements in its new approach. With New Mutants and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness confirmed to bring on the horror, and Elizabeth Olsen guaranteed …

‘New Mutants’ WILL Hit Theaters Under Disney; Do They Have Faith in Boone?

It has been over TWO YEARS since the original date The New Mutants was set to hit theaters. By late 2019 I assumed the film would have been indefinitely shelved or, at the very least, would have premiered quietly over on Hulu. To our surprise, Josh Boone’s film will not only stick to its alleged April 3, 2020 release but it will do so with ZERO alterations to his original vision. That is right. There were no reshoots. This leads to the suspicion that there might not have been anything wrong with the cut to begin with, but rather due to the uncertainty of the merger the film was indefinitely postponed until the dust settled. Now, we know that despite the merger Dark Phoenix still saw the light of day! However, we need to remember that it only did so after a couple delays of its own. More specifically, the film premiered almost a year after originally intended. Why did Dark Phoenix ultimately make it while New Mutants didn’t? I believe Dark Phoenix HAD to …

‘Infinity Saga’ Box Set Costs WHAT?!

When the box set for the Infinity Saga was originally announced I too was yelling, “take my money!” However, with the reveal of the set also comes the reveal of the HEFTY price. The collection that includes all twenty-three (yes, including Hulk) films has a $550 price tag; that’s INSANE. Even if each film alone was marketed at $20 (average for a blu ray) this thing should be around the $460 range. Yes, it’s a pretty set and I appreciate the bindings making a cool visual for display, but I just find that amount to be ridiculously not worth it. We should also remember, that all twenty-three films will be available for streaming on the upcoming Disney+ platform that is set to drop next month. Thanks Feige, but no thanks.

Spider-Man Deal Reached: Two More Films for Disney/Sony

Some prematurely mourned the death of Spider-Man in the MCU while the rest of us knew Disney was tied by the balls the entire time. Sure, the House of Mouse might be a juggernaut, but when it came to the Spider-Man property- they were too deep in not to fold to Sony’s demands; Far From Home established Peter Parker as a central piece of the MCU moving forward, Disney has launched a Marvel park with Spider-Man rides, and ultimately Sony still holds control of the IP. Now, the new peace established only secures TWO more films with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. He will star in the third solo film that will release in 2021, which will likely conclude his personal trilogy. Also, he will star in one more crossover MCU film. Now, we have the ENTIRE slate of projects for Marvel Phase 4. Therefore, it is unlikely we will be seeing him in one of the upcoming films and will rather appear in phase 5. With this all but confirmed, it concludes that Spider-Man 3 will …

‘House of X’ #5: I Don’t Buy It

Yesterday was the release of House of X #5, or, part nine of twelve for the House and Powers mini series. It was a red highlighted issue so we knew we were going to get a bomb—and a bomb we got. We knew the eight mutants that perished on the Orchis mission would have to return. After all, the majority of them are featured on covers for the Dawn of X titles for crying out loud! What we didn’t know was just HOW they were going to return. Well… We got our answer this week… The nation of Krakoa has assembled five special mutants that individually have great abilities, but together are quite literally God defying. Gold Balls (yes, that’s his name), can produce unviable eggs. Proteus can warp reality to make those eggs viable. Elixir can use his ability to make the mutant DNA begin the resurrection process, and Eva Bell can use her time warping abilities to accelerate the maturation of the body (“husk” as referred to in the book) to the desired …

Can a POC Magneto Work?

Twitter was a flutter (a flutter?) yesterday with the rumor that Marvel Studios is considering to cast people of color as  Xavier and Magneto in the upcoming X-Men reboot. Thoughts? WEEEEEEEELLLL…….. MLK and Malcolm X: First and foremost we need to acknowledge where the inspiration for the characters came from. The two icons, and the IP itself, were born from the Civil Rights era where Charles Xavier was a reflection of Martin Luther King Jr. and Magneto was a reflection of Malcolm X. In fact, MLK gave his famous “I Have a Dream…” speech just two weeks before the release of X-Men #1 back in 1963! The idea of two black men playing these roles truthfully isn’t a stretch at all. If anything, it fits like a glove. Of course, Magneto’s adaptation is more complicated than that of Xavier considering his history. If you’ve read the comics, or even seen the original Bryan Singer X-Men film from 2000, you know that Magneto’s origin comes from the darkness of the Holocaust. Have there been a multitude of …
