Alan Moore F****** Hates HBO’s ‘Watchmen’: I’m Here For It

Oh what a time to be a Watchmen fan. I have seen the released trailer, and though I’m a HUGE fan of the graphic novel (a book I suggest everyone, and I mean EVERYONE read) I am equally intrigued and mesmerized be its creator, Alan Moore. Not familiar with the grumpy genius? Well, in the comic world he is known for his creations such as Batman’s The Killing Joke, his run on Swamp Thing, which brought the character to critical acclaim, the mind-blowing V for Vendetta, and of course the unmatched Watchmen.   Now, when I say this man is grumpy I am putting it VERY nicely. Having known about the creator for some time I can tell you that Alan Moore HATES any and all adaptations of his work. He is not for it AT. ALL. This man has spoken some real S*** when it has come to live-action versions of his creations or even taking his characters and recycling them with new writers/artists. Can we understand the anger? After all, imagine creating a piece of …

Time to Call Time of Death for ‘The New Mutants’

Everyone may remember the dumpster fire that was Dark Phoenix (or maybe not… not like anyone went to go see it), but what may have gone under the radar for some is how that movie was being described as Fox Studios’ final project in the world of the mutants. Umm… this is awkward. Almost two years ago Fox Studios released the first and only trailer for it’s horror film, The New Mutants, a spin-off film that would have released after the final X film. What is this group of young weirdos? Well, based on a younger team, the New Mutants was a spin-off comic released in the early 80’s. Like it’s flagship title, the Uncanny X-Men, The New Mutants took several issues before finding it’s beat. That day came with the release of issue #18 which kicked off the famous Demon Bear Saga that, coincidentally enough, was the inspiration for the unreleased film. So, what happened to the project? Shortly after the release of the initial trailer the film went through several release date push-backs until …

What Bombs to Expect at D23?

With Comic-con behind us, attention now turns to next month’s D23 Disney Expo. You might be thinking we should have our nerd guts full from all the MCU reveals over the weekend, but to you I say- NOPE. Kevin Feige said it himself! They didn’t have time to talk Captain Marvel 2, Black Panther 2, GOTG Vol 3, Fantastic Four, and “mutants.” Will we have phase five announcements with phase four not having yet begun? I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. After all, Feige confirms that they have their phase 5 mapped out. We know the previously mentioned films are definitely happening. Therefore touching on them at next months expo doesn’t feel unreasonable.  Since Marvel Studios belongs to Disney, I would expect that the BIG news bombs would be saved for this event instead of Comic-con. What kind of bombs? 1: Fantastic Four Casting: They managed to sneak attack us not only with the announcement of a Blade film, but the surprise casting of Mahershala Ali in the title role! It is wildly important …

‘Young Justice’ and the Mystery of the Token Gay Character

Young Justice has returned for the second half of its third season over on DC Universe. While I’m enjoying the plot unfold and getting to see more familiar faces for the DC world make their series debut, I am still caught up on trying to figure out just WHO the show-runners were referring to when they said, “gay characters have always been present on the team.” I blogged about this during the first half of the season. Though I haven’t posted reviews for the latest episodes, they did provide more information for who could and couldn’t be ruled out. So, let’s take it from the top people! Team roll call! Just like last time, since Weisman said the character(s) have been present since the end of season two, we will omit the mention of any outsiders or others brought on since the beginning of the current season. S1 characters Nightwing- No. He is very much with Barbara Gordon. Superboy- He is engaged to Miss Martian Miss Martian- ditto Kid Flash- Dead and was with Artemis …

‘Beautiful Thing’ Review

The LGBT appreciation continues with the review of not just one of my favorite LGBT movies, but one of my favorite movies PERIOD of all time- Beautiful Thing. Talk about a film before it’s time! I discovered this movie back in 2006. As a gay teen with little places to find representation (let alone a sign of hope), this film REALLY left a stamp on my soul that maybe things don’t have to be so bad! Following Ste (Scott Neal) a stern teen with an abusive father and brother along with Jaime (Glen Berry) his next door neighbor with a rocky mother-son relationship of his own, we have the first (and only?) gay teen romance movie! There are no negatives! I just want to take the time to highlight what made this film such a timeless icon. Not Another Gay Tragedy: When it comes to gay representation we are usually given the gay comic relief or the story of the gay tragedy. The latter has not been in short supply when it comes to gay …

‘Downton Abbey’ First Trailer

Look, this show was so good that it was really just about rich people in the past having dinner and we were hooked! Downton Abbey has to be one of my ALL TIME favorite shows. Also, worth noting, one of the greatest theme songs ever! Yes, I still often play it to get me into the mood for cleaning; it just helps get you into the scrubbing character, you know? Well today we finally got our first trailer for the upcoming film for Downton Abbey and I am very excited! What did we get from the first look? Maggie (dramatic clap) Smith (another dramatic clap): The queen of shade is back, ya’ll! The Dowager Countess is alive and well in 1927 and she is here to give us more memorable one-liners. Personal favorite? “Nothing says success like excess.”  Happy for Thomas?: One thing that was said often during the run of the series was that a full-circle happy ending for Thomas just wouldn’t be likely considering the times he was alive. Homosexuality was of course …

Why Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ Just Might Work

I have been the loudest voice against this movie. I have said time and time again that Warner/DC should be focusing it’s efforts on building up their heroes along with villains, set in a modern setting where crossovers can happen, and that creating a Joker movie without Batman would be against the very identity of the character. After seeing the trailer for the film last week I have to say-I may have to eat my words. The Joker himself has said it himself, he exists because of the Batman. He is completed because of the Batman. If there were no Batman it would be no fun to do the things he does. They are both products of madness. They are both products of a corrupt and fucked up world. Where one chose to do evil the other chose to defend good. They cancel each other out. Heath Ledger’s Joker said it at the end of the Nolan film- Batman will never kill the Joker because that’s a line he cannot cross and the Joker will …
