Top Eight Songs From ‘Hamilton’

Yup. We drank the Kool-Aid. Hamilton delivers on the hype. I’m a big musical fan, but most of them have two to three songs max I really appreciate. Hamilton on the other hand… is Non-Stop (sorry, couldn’t help it). Of course everyone who has seen it has their own list of favorite songs and I’m certain the omission of some from this list can and will offend, but these are my personal favorites from the musical- in order (not an easy task). 8. “Helpless”: This is a solo song for Eliza Hamilton in the first act of the musical (performed by Phillipa Soo in the film). I am corny AF so any love songs in theater are what I’m looking for. I appreciated that this was not only an adorable love song but had a feel of the early 2000’s Pop/R&B. It feels like a perfect blend of show-tune and the songs we used to love back when we were kids from artists like Alicia Keys, Ashanti, and dare I say even a drop of …

Forty Years of Yoda; Lessons Learned From the Master Jedi

Today marks forty years since The Empire Strikes Back released in theaters. It was the film that revealed Darth Vader as Luke’s father, the film that gave us Hoth, the beautiful drink of water Lando Calrissian, and my favorite Star Wars character- Yoda. I thought what a better way to express some love for the character than to reflect on some of his greatest quotes/lessons throughout the franchise. 1: “Do. Or do not. There is no try.“- One of Yoda’s most famous quotes right from ESB. Straight to the point and a quote that has been heard time and time again from all levels of fans. It’s a dagger of a reminder that there is no in between; we either commit entirely to our pursuits and we either succeed or we fail. Often the word “try” is insidiously placed in the package of excuse. It’s a call to maturity in understanding that one needs to own their decisions and give something the entirety of their efforts. 2: “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. …

Battle of YA Streaming Content Begins; ‘Percy Jackson’ and ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ on the Way

Before I get into it, I think it is appropriate to give a HUGE congratulations to all those Percy Jackson fans who have (finally) received the news that their beloved book series will be adapted for Disney+. I am not surprised! I suspected such a thing would happen, and you can read all about it in our piece from last year here. Another thing worth noting is that since Rick Riordan’s official announcement this afternoon Percy Jackson has shot up to trend #1 in the United States on Twitter. WOW. That is no small feat and is very representative of the fan base of these books. When can fans expect the series to drop? Who is cast? Well, there is no information yet and it is unknown how Covid-19 will factor into production, but at the very least fans can know that the series is definitely on the way and the author will work closely with production to ensure his stories are adapted well. For now, only the first five books in his (currently) fifteen …

‘Young Avengers’ Will Likely be for Disney+; Here’s Why

It should come as no surprise to comic fans, who have met the cast of Young Avengers in the pages of Marvel Comics, that they indeed are on their way to live-action; the clues were everywhere! Rumor is going around that filming for the project (unknown if Disney+ or film) should start as early as 2021. Whether this will take a hit due to the pandemic is yet to be determined. My guess is that this will be a Disney+ production. Here’s why- Hulking and Wiccan. No, Young Avengers is nowhere near the fame of DC counterpart, Teen Titans. However it has had and does have a powerful cult following. A large reason for this is due to romantic couple of Hulking and Wiccan. Not only was their relationship presented in the comics as matter-of-fact from its inception but they have one of the most powerful romantic narratives in comics today. This isn’t because of their homosexuality, but because both characters have incredibly developed personal stories that enrich their pairing.  They’re not a “gay couple” but …

Art Spotlight – Obi Arisukwu

For this installment of art spotlight, I’m here to highlight an artist that I have been following for quite some time, Obi Arisukwu (a.k.a Obi Aris). I took notice of his work when I was browsing through instagram and stumbled across an awesome illustration he did of Marvel villain Thanos in a Coogi sweater, a nod to Biggie. I scrolled through more of his work and of course immediately hit the follow button. His work on prominent movie/tv characters, to comic heroes, and famous musicians like ‘Queen Bey’ has gained him a solid following. What caught my attention was not only the great detail in his illustration but the style which seems almost Disney and comic-esque. He has ability to create a portrait of Jay-Z and make it look like he’s about to go toe to toe with Gastón. Another great thing about Obi is he will post pictures or videos of his rough drafts before he lays down the final layers, giving us a glimpse of his creative process. I have included some of …

Wolverine Should Enter the MCU the Comics Way

We have little details regarding when we can expect the mutants to join the MCU. It was recently corrected that Disney does NOT see The New Mutants as part of their cinematic universe. However, should the film exceed expectations at the box office then I’m sure that’s nothing a little reality manipulation can’t fix that. If we are doing a clean reboot though, what does that look like? I’m a part of the camp that believes the X-Men should be as comic book accurate as possible. By this I mean the first film, or series, should focus on the original five members; Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel. Are they all fan favorites? No. Yet as I’ve said on many occasions, if the MCU can make Guardians of the Galaxy work then there is little to no reason the original five can’t win over the casual comic and movie fan as well. When it comes to actual favorites such as Storm and Wolverine, I think their level of fandom has earned them a space …

‘New Mutants’ Trailer REACTION

After two years we FINALLY have a new trailer for The New Mutants! Better than the first? Sure! Enough to get people to theaters? Let’s break it down! Catches the Spirit: Right off the bat I have to say that the trailer seems to catch the spirit of what makes the New Mutants special; at least what made them special back in the day starting with issue #18, the Demon Bear Saga, and the introduction of Bill Sienkiewicz’s art. There’s a creepiness to it, a grit, and the choice to use Pink Floyd in the trailer is a cherry on top of the cake. The New Mutants comic was able to connect horror elements into the superhero genre and it worked! I can’t tell from this trailer if the film will have the same success in this medium… I’m personally not a horror fan. I don’t mind some suspense and eerie aesthetics, but if that is the limit of it I would personally be fine with it.     Sunspot Issue: This will likely get …

‘Moon Knight’ to Feature Two Marvel Horror Characters; Is the MCU Embracing Fear?

Moon Knight is one of the many upcoming Marvel shows that will make its debut over on Disney+. Though an official release date (nor cast) has been confirmed at this time, we are receiving information regarding what characters we might have the chance to meet. In latest news it seems that both Dracula (yeah, that guy) and Werewolf by Night are set to appear in this upcoming Marvel show! Um, ok! Let’s talk about that! Something catching my eye is just how much the concept of “horror” seems to continue popping up within future Marvel projects. We have confirmed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the first official horror movie within the MCU. WandaVision, another series slated to premiere on Disney+, will incorporate horror elements as Wanda and Vision navigate an alternate reality. Then most recently we received news that the lone remaining Fox film, The New Mutants, will indeed move ahead with its April 3 release this year and will have a new trailer on January 6; if you didn’t already know, …
