“Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna” Review

You bet your A** I’m reviewing this! So, as the resident nerd on the couch it should come as no surprise that, back in the day, I was a die-hard Digimon fan. I watched the original two shows every saturday morning (religiously) and even stomached the Tri films. Following the trend of its predecessors, Last Evolution Kizuna engages another time jump bringing the core characters to 2010. At this time the majority of the original children have entered their 20’s and alas adulthood. Here we go; the good and the bad of this twenty-year franchise’s farewell. THE GOOD Animation: Getting the technical stuff out of the way as usual; the animation in this film is superb. Yes, it brings back the art design from the original two shows but with an upgrade. The majority of scenes, especially the action ones, are great to take in along with the score. As in awe as I was of the art I was equally frustated at the same time wondering where this effort was for the six films …

The REAL 13 Nights of Halloween

This year, the gentlemen at 17 Waverly Podcast decided to take the Halloween programming schedule into our OWN hands. For years we’ve complained about the many ‘# nights of Halloween’ lists where most of the movies suggested have no real connection to the holiday. This year we decided to create a list of our own that we think is THE list for anyone that loves Halloween or is looking to get in the mood. While this list may change over time with the addition of newer moves, we believe this is currently the strongest list of movies to get anyone in the halloween spirit. Listen to our latest podcast episode ‘Halloween Hijinks Part 1’ for an explanation of our first 4 movies on this list. If you think we overlooked any movies or if you think a movie we have does not belong, let us know in the comments or on twitter! 17 Waverly Podcast 13 Nights of Halloween schedule: The Craft (1996) – Oct. 19 Casper (1995) – Oct. 20 Scream – Oct. 21 …

‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’ Episodes 7-9 Review

Oh dear… This did not stick the landing. Let’s just get this over with. Too Much Going On: So by the time we get to the last set of episodes we have more of an info dump. It turns out Peter and Rebecca have been planning to make their merge to the children permanent so they could get the hell outta dodge. I repeat- this pair of lovers were manipulating the children siblings so they would willingly merge with the ghosts so they could take total control of their bodies in the real world. Meanwhile, the children would infanantly stay in a memory somewhere in dream land? I don’t know. Alright, that explains them, what about all the other ghosts in the house? It turns out the lady in the lake was the ghost who started it all. She is the cause of the death of many people still haunting the mansion, but also the reason why none of them can leave Bly…However… This was All a Coincidence?: I had suspected that the reason the …

Reflections from ‘The Boys in the Band’

Having already discussed the 1970’s version on the Pod I struggled to figure out how I wanted to address the new Netflix version of The Boys in the Band. Rather than review the movie (which script-wise is basically the same as the 1970’s) I wanted to touch on key elements of the story and my takeaways. Yes, let’s do that. Though the original film came out in 1970 the play first premiered off-Broadway in 1968; about a year before the Stonewall riots. Watching these two versions, and reflecting on the story and characters, I had to really do my best to keep that in mind. Though ALL of the elements that I’m going to touch upon in this piece very much still exist today, I acknowledge that the experiences of these characters were much more intense… Ok, here we go. The Harold and Michael Dichotomy: Self-hate is a real thing across the board for all people from all walks of life. Specifically, the experience of self-hate as a gay man, is something all too familiar …

‘New Mutants’ SPOILER Review

Thanks to the power of drive-in movie theaters in upstate New York I was finally able to see the (kind of?) anticipated New Mutants. It has been a hot minute since I have been able to review anything so let’s waste no more time; the good and the bad. The GOOD 1: Actors- These are some of my favorite X-book characters, and having them brought to life on screen supplied a fair dose of nerd anxiety. After seeing the cast in the roles I have to say I was satisfied with (most of) the portrayals we got. Ana Taylor-joy as Magik was fun to watch. I think she did a fantastic job of embodying Ilyana. That being said, I don’t know how I felt about her being our stand-in villain until the real villain revealed itself. Any and every scene she appears in she makes an aggressive choice to treat Dani like trash and sprinkle dashes of racism in between. Of course there is an explenation for this down the road, I digress, but overall …

Episode 73 – Chadwick Forever

Welcome back for another installment of the 17 Waverly Podcast! This week we decided to give recognition to the star of ‘Black Panther’, Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick tragically passed away on August 28th, 2020 at the young age of 43 after a battle with colon cancer. While he may be gone, we will never forget the impact he left on us. So this week we chose 3 movies that he starred in for our discussion and reviews. We start the episode with a quick Black Panther discussion and then move to ‘Get On Up’ (2014) @ (0:15:00), ’42’ (2013) @ (0:36:40), and finally ‘Marshall’ (2017) @ (0:58:00). Join us for all that and so much more! Listen here: You can also stream the episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Google Podcasts.

Episode 72 – The Not So Lost Episode

Welcome back everyone! So as we’ve mentioned before, we had an episode of the pod that was recorded MONTHS ago but we thought was lost due to technical issues. In a fortunate turn of events, we were able to salvage the episode and give it to you all! In this episode, we discussed James Cameron’s ‘The Terminator’ franchise in all good, bad, and ugly glory. Join us for that and much more! Listen here: You can also stream the episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Google Podcasts.
