Episode 51 – Legendary Farewell

We are BACK on the couch for episode 51!  We may be a television and film podcast but it only felt right to open the show to reflect on the tragedy that took the lives of the legendary Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven other souls. While attempting to transition into usual business- This week we also want to review season 2 of Netflix’s Sex Education (00:24:45)! Do we agree with Eric’s choice between Adam and Gay Drake- I mean Rahim? How many times DO we say anal douching? What’s the deal with Maive and this new guy? We’ll give you our irrelevant takes! Next, it wouldn’t be the couch if we didn’t jump on hot topics WEEKS after they’ve become room temperature. Therefore, we dive into the three-part docu-series on Aaron Hernandez (00:40:45) and give our thoughts on that mess. Lastly, stick around as we chat about the South Korean oscar nominated film making waves; Parasite (00:59:00). Is it as good as everyone says? How does it blend comedy, drama, and suspense? Well, we’ll give …

Art Spotlight – Obi Arisukwu

For this installment of art spotlight, I’m here to highlight an artist that I have been following for quite some time, Obi Arisukwu (a.k.a Obi Aris). I took notice of his work when I was browsing through instagram and stumbled across an awesome illustration he did of Marvel villain Thanos in a Coogi sweater, a nod to Biggie. I scrolled through more of his work and of course immediately hit the follow button. His work on prominent movie/tv characters, to comic heroes, and famous musicians like ‘Queen Bey’ has gained him a solid following. What caught my attention was not only the great detail in his illustration but the style which seems almost Disney and comic-esque. He has ability to create a portrait of Jay-Z and make it look like he’s about to go toe to toe with Gastón. Another great thing about Obi is he will post pictures or videos of his rough drafts before he lays down the final layers, giving us a glimpse of his creative process. I have included some of …

Three Takeaways from ‘Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez’

I’m not a football guy, nor did I follow the Aaron Hernandez drama when it was happening live. However, I DO enjoy myself some murder trial documentaries on Netflix as much as the next basic b****. Therefore, when the former Patriots player  (only know that because of this series) was getting a three-part series I could NOT press play fast enough. Yet again, this isn’t a review of what was good or bad about the series, but rather a desire to go over some of the biggest takeaways from the project. 1: Fine, Sexuality, Let’s Get That Out of the Way:  One of the biggest things that this series wanted to touch on was the conversation of Aaron’s sexuality. Within the documentary we have a childhood friend (Dennis SanSoucie) talk about the off and on relationship they had from seventh grade to their junior year in high school. After this experience it would appear that there was no one else to claim they had a romantic or sexual relationship with him? I appreciate what the …

ALL X-Titles Thus Far and Beyond

I am a huge Hickman fan. I absolutely loved the HOX/POX miniseries we got last year. I have been enjoying the majority, but certainly not all, of the Dawn of X titles that we have been getting. With 2020 upon us it seems we’ve had announcement after announcement after announcement for new titles! Having trouble keeping up with what is coming out and when, I figured I would go ahead and address the status of the current titles and what we can expect coming up. 1: X-Force: This is one of, if not THE book, that feels like the greatest direct sequel to the HOX/POX material we got last year. It’s dark, well written, and #5 did not disappoint. I’ve said it before, I’m not a huge X-Force guy but this book really delivers. I’m hoping for Colossus to get well soon so he can join in on the action, and especially need Jean to get out of that damn groovy dress; this is X-Force not the Brady Bunch. 2: New Mutants: It dipped there for a …

Thirteen Times ‘Dragon Ball Z’ Put Chichi Through Absolute Hell

In honor of the release of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot I wanted to go down memory lane, much as the game lets us do, and reflect on something that seemed to go unnoticed; all the times this anime just totally s*** on Chichi’s peace of mind. 1: Remember the time that Chichi thought her husband was taking their son to meet their childhood friends only to find out that he was murdered and her toddler was kidnapped by a former homicidal maniac? 2: Remember that time that two psychopathic aliens came to Earth and the frontline of defense was a former homicidal maniac, a lower than average height man, a serial cheater, a three-eyed man with his ambiguously defined partner, and yes, HER CHILD. 3: Remember that time that Chichi got her husband back, and her son survived a traumatic battle only to discover that her childhood friends were shipping him off to space to an unknown planet to retrieve magical balls that any other able adult could have volunteered for? 4: Remember that time …

Wolverine Should Enter the MCU the Comics Way

We have little details regarding when we can expect the mutants to join the MCU. It was recently corrected that Disney does NOT see The New Mutants as part of their cinematic universe. However, should the film exceed expectations at the box office then I’m sure that’s nothing a little reality manipulation can’t fix that. If we are doing a clean reboot though, what does that look like? I’m a part of the camp that believes the X-Men should be as comic book accurate as possible. By this I mean the first film, or series, should focus on the original five members; Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel. Are they all fan favorites? No. Yet as I’ve said on many occasions, if the MCU can make Guardians of the Galaxy work then there is little to no reason the original five can’t win over the casual comic and movie fan as well. When it comes to actual favorites such as Storm and Wolverine, I think their level of fandom has earned them a space …

‘Little Women’ REVIEW

Friday night so, a club? A bar? Party? Nah. My sweat pants, fried chicken, and the comfort of a theater to see this generations rendition of Little Women. Let’s talk about the good and the bad! The GOOD Florence. Pugh.: I have not yet seen a performance by this actress, but holy cow where did she come from? I thought it was an odd choice to have the same actress play Amy, the youngest of the four sisters, throughout considering that who she is as an adult is very distinct from who she is as a much younger child- understandably;  how was this going to work? Well, Florence doesn’t just pull it off she makes it my favorite performance in the film. The way she plays young Amy has all the beats from the novel and even from the 90’s version played by Kirsten Dunst, but it’s in her tone of sarcasm and cheekiness that makes it something totally unique and believable. Her younger self holds so many of the comedic cards in this film; …

Episode 49 – So If Anyone Is Listening

This week the boys are back and there is a lot to unpack. The Golden Globes were this week so we start the episode discussing Ricky Gervais and the winners of the major awards (0:08:30). While we are on that subject, Rom gives his review of the movie ‘1917’ and tries to convince Gab to break his war movie boycott to see it (0:11:45). The big discussion of this episode then comes when we review the movie ‘Marriage Story’ on Netflix and talk about love (0:25:23). Please join us on the couch for all that and more, like the new trailer to ‘New Mutants’.

‘Birds of Prey’ FINAL Trailer; Alright, I Think I Get It

It is just a good week for comic movie trailers! We have our final preview of next month’s Birds of Prey. Yes, the one without Oracle (I’m still not over it)! Has the trailer changed my feelings? Let’s get into it! More of the Birds: Right off the bat I would like to express my gratitude that the trailer made the effort to showcase the ensemble better than the original trailer did. I understand that no matter what this is GOING to be the Harley Quinn show. However, it isn’t much to ask that the film at least do right by its supporting characters and make sure they get their fare share of screen time.  This trailer showed that Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) will have her powers! Will there be the iconic leather jacket and fishnets? Apparently not, but what can we say? Pick your battles. It looks like Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) will get some decent action scenes; as well as many of the other members to the ensemble. Overall, though these characters seem to …
