‘Downton Abbey’: Will There be More?

For a podcast and a site where I usually rant about comic related media, you may be shocked to learn that I’m a HUGE Downton-head. I f****** loved this show. It is about people cleaning and having dinner every episode and I am equally invested on my couch having a ball. Did I enjoy the film? F*** yes! It felt like one large episode that too was about cleaning and eating some good food. It worked. The audience at my theater consisted of super-fans and it was a communal experience. One of my favorite theater experiences this year. Now, I could rant about everything I loved about the film, but instead I want to dive into the likelihood of this setting off a new film franchise. Goodnight Dowager: Out of the gates I have to give all the respect on Earth to Dame Maggie Smith. Just as she did during the series run, she was easily my favorite in the movie. “I don’t argue, I explain.” Love it. However, as I lightly suspected, the film …

Spider-Man Deal Reached: Two More Films for Disney/Sony

Some prematurely mourned the death of Spider-Man in the MCU while the rest of us knew Disney was tied by the balls the entire time. Sure, the House of Mouse might be a juggernaut, but when it came to the Spider-Man property- they were too deep in not to fold to Sony’s demands; Far From Home established Peter Parker as a central piece of the MCU moving forward, Disney has launched a Marvel park with Spider-Man rides, and ultimately Sony still holds control of the IP. Now, the new peace established only secures TWO more films with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. He will star in the third solo film that will release in 2021, which will likely conclude his personal trilogy. Also, he will star in one more crossover MCU film. Now, we have the ENTIRE slate of projects for Marvel Phase 4. Therefore, it is unlikely we will be seeing him in one of the upcoming films and will rather appear in phase 5. With this all but confirmed, it concludes that Spider-Man 3 will …

‘TITANS’ 2×04: ‘Aqualad’

It is Monday so that means it is time for another review/rant on the latest episode of DC Universe’s, Titans! THE GOOD Varsity Team: So, for the first time this week we got to visit the good old days(?) when the original Titans members occupied the tower. We had Dick once again in his Robin suit, Hawk, Dove, Donna Troy, and, a new face, Aqualad! I enjoyed getting to see the original team assembled for the entire episode as it heavily implied that we would be getting the answers as to what happened that made them all go their separate ways. The opening fight sequence with the five was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the banter among them as well. Now, if I’m being honest, some stuff did fall flat. They’re just not that fun of a group! I know, I know, this is SERIOUS Titans, but still! The five don’t really seem to have all that much chemistry between them besides the fact that they’re unreasonably attractive. Yet, overall, I did really enjoy …

‘Titans’ 2×03: ‘Ghosts’ Review

Another week so another episode of Titans! No time to waste; the good and the bad of the latest episode of the DC Universe sophomore season. THE GOOD Varsity Team Together: In this weeks episode our veteran members return to Titans Tower in order to address the threat of Doctor Light! As mentioned last week, once again that foundation laid out in season one shows its benefit here; We already know our characters and their relationships so when this plot shows up we can just get right into it! Dove unfortunately returned to her passive supporting voice to Hawk’s (justified?) frustration, but whatever. I’m glad to see not just the four of them working together, but to see the JV team continue training and continue to master their skills. They felt like nomads in season one and finally we’re getting to see superheroes be-well- super! Baddie Duo: Of course, respect is owed to the scenes with Doctor Light and Slade. I still can’t believe we’re getting a live-action series with all these characters!! Now  I’m wondering, with …

Jharrel Jerome Wins Emmy for”When They See Us”; Will He Be Our Mister Miracle?

Just some minutes ago we had the pleasure of seeing Jharrel Jerome accept his first Emmy for his work in When They See Us. Now, not just any Emmy, but the Emmy for Best Lead Actor! HUGE moment for this 21-year-old talent from the Bronx. Now, my nerd brain goes immediately to thoughts on Ava DuVernay’s next project, The New Gods.  DuVernay herself has said that she often brings talent from previous projects into the next, and I have a feeling that Jharrel’s win tonight could easily make him a front-runner for the DC property cast.  To play who exactly? Why, Mister Miracle of course! Playing the natural born son of High Father of the planet New Genesis, Mister Miracle was offered up in a trade in order to secure peace with the rival planet, Apokalips. That’s right, ya’ll! Darkseid is the adoptive father of this character! There is a kindness to Jerome’s face and very much to how he carries himself. Mister Miracle, despite growing up in a torturous environment, never surrendered his optimist …

‘House of X’ #5: I Don’t Buy It

Yesterday was the release of House of X #5, or, part nine of twelve for the House and Powers mini series. It was a red highlighted issue so we knew we were going to get a bomb—and a bomb we got. We knew the eight mutants that perished on the Orchis mission would have to return. After all, the majority of them are featured on covers for the Dawn of X titles for crying out loud! What we didn’t know was just HOW they were going to return. Well… We got our answer this week… The nation of Krakoa has assembled five special mutants that individually have great abilities, but together are quite literally God defying. Gold Balls (yes, that’s his name), can produce unviable eggs. Proteus can warp reality to make those eggs viable. Elixir can use his ability to make the mutant DNA begin the resurrection process, and Eva Bell can use her time warping abilities to accelerate the maturation of the body (“husk” as referred to in the book) to the desired …

‘HUSTLERS’ SPOILER Review

Though it wasn’t able to beat It: Chapter 2 out of it’s #1 spot at the box office, Hustlers has certainly been gaining some buzz (especially of the Oscar variety??). SO, let’s get into the good and the bad! THE GOOD No Shame: You go in thinking the film will be entirely about stripper life, but it isn’t! The film earns its title showcasing characters that are really doing what they can to make money and not only survive, but thrive. The film made a wise choice in setting up their characters in 2007, just before the financial crisis hit; we see them breakdown this culture, break down their business, and showcase how they earned their coins. Now, what could have been so easy to do in this movie was create slut-shaming characters. Destiny’s (Constance Wu) grandmother could have EASILY been made a character that looked down and judged her granddaughter for the methods she used to make her living. They could have easily created a conflict with Ramona (J Lo) and her daughter, but they …

Can a POC Magneto Work?

Twitter was a flutter (a flutter?) yesterday with the rumor that Marvel Studios is considering to cast people of color as  Xavier and Magneto in the upcoming X-Men reboot. Thoughts? WEEEEEEEELLLL…….. MLK and Malcolm X: First and foremost we need to acknowledge where the inspiration for the characters came from. The two icons, and the IP itself, were born from the Civil Rights era where Charles Xavier was a reflection of Martin Luther King Jr. and Magneto was a reflection of Malcolm X. In fact, MLK gave his famous “I Have a Dream…” speech just two weeks before the release of X-Men #1 back in 1963! The idea of two black men playing these roles truthfully isn’t a stretch at all. If anything, it fits like a glove. Of course, Magneto’s adaptation is more complicated than that of Xavier considering his history. If you’ve read the comics, or even seen the original Bryan Singer X-Men film from 2000, you know that Magneto’s origin comes from the darkness of the Holocaust. Have there been a multitude of …

‘TITANS’ 2×02: Rose

I’m back to talk the latest episode of Titans. Is it an improvement from season one and the “meh” season premiere? The GOOD Love a Teen Drama: Something I talked about at the conclusion of the first season was how the entire thing felt more like a prologue/introduction instead of a complete story. As a comic fan it was fine for me. I believed doing this was certainly creating a mediocre first season, but it was also setting up an exceptional foundation for the future. This second episode is allowing me to see some of the rewards of that base. I had a great time seeing Jason and Gar train, getting to see more of Gar and Raven’s awkward relationship unfold, getting to see more of Donna and Kory interact, and even just seeing everyone hanging out at the luxurious Titans tower! This season the showrunners have created two groups; Titans and Teen Titans. This is perfect. Taking me back to the most recent comics set-up. Dick, Donna, Hank, Dawn, and Kory are now in …
