‘Aladdin’ Review

OK. I needed to give myself a few days to really make up my mind on how I felt about this one… After much thinking… I like it. GOOD Jasmine: Let’s start with the MVP of this film. Naomi Scott as Jasmine steals the show.  Her costumes, her delivery, her original song- she nails it all. We have seen with previous live-action Disney adaptations the moves to modernize the female characters. Jasmine is no different for this movie. It wasn’t until seeing Naomi Scott’s performance that I realized how crappy Jasmine’s role was in the original? She is the legitimate child of the sultan but she has no claim to the throne! She has to marry a prince of a foreign land so HE can rule Agrabah. The F#$@#% is that?! This Jasmine has more ambition than just the idea of her freedom to choose. She wants to do right by the people of her city and she wants to rule because it’s, well, her right! I was skeptical about the original song, but I think …

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Review

Yes, I am aware this movie came out a year ago. Yes, I am aware this review is late as all living F#$^. BUT, I just saw it for the first time and S@$^ has to be said! I will get it out of the way that there was nothing about this film I disliked. It was completely up my alley. So I just want to rant about my favorite elements. Gemma Chan: Gemma played Astrid, Nick’s cousin with the heart of gold. Her first scene with the pearl earrings had me a bit skeptical of her character. I could tell that Nick’s family was going to be a roller coaster and give us the cliche “rich family that hates the commoner” and I thought she would prove to be the worst of them. However, she really was made with a heart of gold! I preach quite often that I’m all for feminist characters and female empowerment in film/television, but can get really annoyed when the direction doesn’t trust that the audience will understand on their …

Art Spotlight – Xi Ding

Caricature art is something that’s always intriguing, as it can be done so quickly and so effectively depending on the artist. For this weeks Art Spotlight, we would love to showcase the work of award-winning Caricature artist, Xi Ding based in Austria. Not only is he spectacular at getting the details and features of those that he is drawing, but he does it at an incredible speed. According to his website, he can draw caricatures for up to 120 people throughout the course of one evening event! That’s serious skill. What drew our attention to him though, was his work on characters from popular movies and television shows. Check out his website here, and some of our favorite pieces below!

Episode 26 – Down Town Material

Welcome back to the couch everyone! We’re here watching some tv, discussing the latest and greatest from this past week in entertainment. Right off the bat we get into the ‘big’ finale of Game of Thrones @ 0:02:00, as well as give our final thoughts on how they closed out the season overall. @ 0:41:45 we switch gears and give our thoughts on the new Batman casting and then @ 0:53:00 we start discussing all the latest trailer drops from the past week. We finish the episode explaining the arrival of AEW (All Elite Wrestling) and what it means for the WWE @ 01:09:10, plus much much more!

‘Toy Story’ 4 Final Trailer

Pixar has released the final trailer for Toy Story 4! Thoughts? Bow Peep: This may be Bow Peep by name but everything else seems different about her. Of course, we have to take into consideration culture back in 1995 and where we are now in 2019 (nine years since Toy Story 3, wtf). Nothing wrong with evolution of a character, but I’m hoping there will still be some space for that cute Woody and Bow chemistry that we got back in the 90’s. It’s also exciting to see her front and center!  She was ultimately a side character in the first two films and was presumed dead in the third! I understood when this film was announced that it would be very much a love story for Woody and her and I’m really hoping that is still the case. Beautiful: Visually this movie is so stunning that it’s scary. The clip in the rain and the visual of that cat walking away from the dead stuffed animal (hilariously cryptic)?. My concerns have never revolved around the idea …

‘Downton Abbey’ First Trailer

Look, this show was so good that it was really just about rich people in the past having dinner and we were hooked! Downton Abbey has to be one of my ALL TIME favorite shows. Also, worth noting, one of the greatest theme songs ever! Yes, I still often play it to get me into the mood for cleaning; it just helps get you into the scrubbing character, you know? Well today we finally got our first trailer for the upcoming film for Downton Abbey and I am very excited! What did we get from the first look? Maggie (dramatic clap) Smith (another dramatic clap): The queen of shade is back, ya’ll! The Dowager Countess is alive and well in 1927 and she is here to give us more memorable one-liners. Personal favorite? “Nothing says success like excess.”  Happy for Thomas?: One thing that was said often during the run of the series was that a full-circle happy ending for Thomas just wouldn’t be likely considering the times he was alive. Homosexuality was of course …

‘His Dark Materials’ Heading to HBO

Directly after last night’s finale to Game of Thrones HBO decided to treat us with the trailer for its upcoming fantasy series, His Dark Materials. Is this a move to make sure subscriptions aren’t cancelled like wildfire? You bet! However, I have to say, despite this suicide-watch move, the new series looks promising! Some of you might remember back in 2007 when a little movie titled The Golden Compass hit theaters. Well, His Dark Materials will be a series based on the best selling novels by Phillip Pullman with season one focusing specifically on The Golden Compass, the first novel of the trilogy. Set in an alternate world, the soul of all humans lives outside of their bodies taking the shapes of different animals known as Daemons. In childhood these daemons can change their shape as much as they please. When a person reaches adulthood the daemon takes one final animal form and remains that way forever. The story follows our protagonist, Lyra Belacqua (Logan bad-ass, Dafne Keene) as she heads to the arctic to …

‘Game of Thrones’ Finale: Did it Deliver?

We made it folks! After eight seasons and nine years we have finally arrived at the highly anticipated Game of Thrones finale. What are the thoughts? Uh, Just Move Over?: The episode opens with a shocked Tyrion making his way into what remains of the Red Keep. He goes down into the debris filled underground where he hopes his brother and sister made their escape. Unfortunately, he finds that they have been squashed by rocks! The problem? Well, THE REST OF THE PLACE IS JUST PEACHY!? Like, Cersei and Jaime literally just had to stop their drama for twenty seconds to take a couple steps over to the right and they would have been fine. Actually, the could have done the same to the left. Also, they could have gotten under the dragon skull. They could have gone to the far end of the place closer to the entrance. You get the idea. Their death was not only lame it was so stupid considering the aftermath of the area! Either way, it is the final moment …

Rebirth of the ‘Percy Jackson’ Series?

As we all know, just a couple months ago Disney absorbed 20th Century Fox leading to the return of the X-Men and Fantastic Four to Marvel Studios. Of course, this also meant that lesser known IP’s were acquired by Disney as well. There is one in particular I believe is worth pointing out and that would be the Percy Jackson series which had two films produced by 20th Century Fox. I wouldn’t call either of these films successes. Hell, neither would the author of the book series who is hilariously unapologetic over how much he hates these things. Any-who, regardless of their mediocre box office, the rights to the Percy Jackson series now belong to Disney! Why should this matter? Well, interestingly enough the publisher for the books is none other than Disney-Hyperion… Some might be thinking, why would a Disney published book have a movie made over at Fox? Well, publishing rights and film rights are different things! Also, just because a studio buys film rights to a book doesn’t mean they ever have …
